Detoxification

Detoxification programs have been around for hundreds, if not thousands of years. From the beginning of time, we have learned that our ancestors have used potions, concoctions and wraps to rid disease from the body with such things as plants, clay, and what we now label as poisons. 

Most recently we have seen such detoxification programs consisting of honey and cayenne pepper, epson salt and olive oil, as well as other elixirs. The question is, are they healthy? Are they really detoxifying the body? Are they supporting the biochemical pathways that are needed in order to cleanse and metabolically support us or, are they just creating more problems for us in the long run? 

As a practitioner of functional and integrative medicine, my first responsibility to my patients is always to provide recommendations based upon sound science, also known as evidence based medicine, which is both safe and effective. I always look at my medical text books for the basic physiological reason for what we are doing. In other words, based upon how our bodies function, what is going to work and why. 

Over my many years in practice (over 33 years in practice) I have researched and found a number of foundational approaches for safe and effect detoxification programs and a number of reasons why we should all consider detoxification as a part of our general health care.
